The Fontanelles’ latest recording endeavor began in the most Minnesota way possible — in a cabin in the woods in January. “It was cold, like 20 below,” says front man Dave Mehling. “It’s a pretty nice cabin … just a wood stove in there, though. So it was cold.” Mehling and drummer Jason McGlone, guitarist Darin Rieland and bassist Beau Jeffrey tracked the songs live and then dove into a year of post-production from home, with Mehling sometimes writing and “distilling” from the road with Gaelynn Lea. “It’s good to take time sometimes,” Mehling says. Expect some surprises, significant synth and the same sweet rock and roll.
