Everything changed for Amy Abts in 2007. Once a mainstay of the Duluth music scene, Abts was diagnosed with a degenerative disease of the cranial nerves. The 2018 indie folk release, Fifty-Fifty, chronicles the decade that followed, as medical issues attacked Abts’ ears and hands. “My initial response is, ‘OK, well I’m gonna play.’” The struggle with illness has made Abts grateful. “Your lows are lower but then the highs are a little bit higher,” Abts says. “When it’s taken away from you, you realize how special it is.” Abts will be joined by bassist George Ellsworth, guitarist Greg Cougar Conley and Kelly Mason on trumpet.
